Earn rewards for active and sustainable travel
Step Up is a big thank you from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Students Union for travelling sustainably.
Every time you walk, run, cycle or use public transport to get to the University you can earn BetterPoints or BetterTickets. BetterPoints can be spent on great local discounts and offers, on high street vouchers, or donated to local good causes and national charities. You can redeem with as little as 1,000 BetterPoints and donate at anytime once you start earning your rewards.
What rewards can you earn?
Active and Sustainable rewards: earn 25 BetterPoints up to four times a day for travelling sustainably to and around University of Sheffield locations.
Get Active: for every 25 minutes of walking, running or cycling you'll earn 1 prize draw ticket up to a maximum of 6 tickets per week whenever an eligible prize draw is open.
Travelling in by train? You will also be rewarded 25 BetterPoints for using the train up to twice per day (passing through Sheffield station).

Taking part is easy!

Download the BetterPoints app from the App Store or Google Play.

Tap “Join Now” in the app and register with your university email address.

You will automatically be eligible to join the Step Up Challenge. There will be a welcome message about this on your timeline in the app.

Start tracking your active and sustainable journeys.
Remember to answer the Baseline survey by tapping ▶️ in the top right-hand corner and answering our short survey.
If you’d prefer to let the app detect your activities, just turn on automatic tracking. This will detect your walking, running and cycling journeys, and mark all vehicle journeys as 'In Vehicle.' Trips will appear after being validated on the app (usually within an hour of completion). All data is anonymised and used solely for the purpose of improving travel options at the University.
